The awaited PLANETRONIKA pilot just hit youtube after it first was teased in december. The new pilot is made by Rafael Andaya and takes a lot of inspiration from 2000s animation. The first thing I think about when I see it is just the vibe of Jetix.
This is seemingly Rafaels first big project altough he has made some test animations previously and worked on music videos. I think this is an outstanding showing and I’m really curious how this will continue.
What is PLANETRONIKA?
Planetronika is about the red headed space explorer Butterfly (Bella Sapphire) as well as her funky gelatinous best friend Freestyle (ItsBeeache). They both make for a pretty laidback duo where Butterfly seems most interested in her looks while Freestyle is a little more focused on the task at hand. The world is seemingly inhabited by small and strange orb shaped animals that serve as the gangs sidekicks. The episode is locked to 480p on YouTube to mimic the resolution on a CTR television.
In the Pilot we follow Butterflies and Freestyles hectic game of basketball outside of Freestyle’s fathers shop on planet Tereste. They accidentally fling the ball away to hard and cause panic and destruction everywhere around them.
Really fun show
The show is very stylistically interesting. I really like how it plays into 2000s esthetics. Butterfly feels sort of like an amalgamation between Totally Spies, Kim possible, and Bloom from Winxclub. The orb animals sort of remind me of the Jetix logo although I’m unsure if that is intentional, it do however fit. I like the whole setting of space which is filled with a ton of random creatures and aliens as it lends itself well to this stylized world.
This is not really a pilot that wants to sit down and tell you all the lore, its more interested in showing of some fun animation and introducing the main cast to the audience. There are many cute and funny jokes and if you are a fan of the style it will definetly be a hit with you.
Its a pilot that makes you wonder what else could be out in the vast space of Planetronika.
