Jremby interview – Agent Calc creator

Q. Hi, would you like to introduce yourself?

Hello Hello! My name is Jordan, but I go by Jremby online! I’m a Black artist from New York who loves older 80s and 90s media and radio! It is my jam!!!

Q. How would you describe your work for someone who hasn’t seen it?

I’d hope that my work gives off the look of those awesome old-school Japanese game magazine covers and advertisements, or something of an old work training tape- that sense of ease but pop of color. Or at least that’s the shift my art has been headed toward now. I like to do redraws for fun of said interests!

Q. How did you get into animation?

It’s a bit of a wacky road, but to quickly summarize it haha, it jumps from making silly comics in elementary school, to making a bunch of flipnotes, to learning about Flipnote Hatena, then cartoons on YouTube/ Newgrounds, leading to COVID, where in high school I’d pick up making Flipnotes again.

The main pusher was coming up with a fake indie studio like Rooster Teeth with some friends in high school and making stories and cartoon ideas, and being like, “wait…how are we supposed to make these if we don’t have money? I guess I’ll start making my cartoons!”

Q. Could you tell me a little about your characters?

Chet Blueman: Chet is a super cool dude who everyone likes, super confident, swag, and based a bit off my twin brother (my goat). When he panics and freaks out and loses his cool, that’s all me. lol

Agent Calc: Calc is a bounty hunter, calls himself an agent, dresses as a detective, and wears a white graphic tee with a picture of a tie on it. I don’t know if people know that last thing. He sucks at math and is trying to kill all the random wacky villains that are trying to, for some reason, teach lessons. He’s a badass who just didn’t focus in school.

Winkus Dinkus: Straight-up self-inserts of me and my twin. I’m the red one; twin is the blue one. They are funny twin who will sing their heart out for the gold playa.

Fives: A character I haven’t gotten around to yet, but a character I’m hoping to introduce more in the future; we will see… I have a whole pitch bible of him on my gram though!

Q. As of now you’ve released 3 animated shorts films and a couple of other smaller projects. Agent Calc has reached over 400k viewers on youtube alone while The Golden Buzzer has recieved more humble viewership. How do you feel about the reception to your work?

Any viewership to me is good viewership; I would say I’m lucky to have reached some pretty cool numbers in regards to people liking my work. Honestly, I wish all of my stuff reached high numbers just cause its cool knowing a bigger audience either laughed or had a good time watching it- higher numbers, more smiles. Plus, I believe Calc gets most of its views from the “Calc is short for Calculator, I’m just using slang” bit, haha, my headcanon.

Q. Your previous projects have all been made while studying at SVA in NYC where you graduated last year. What have you been doing since graduation?

As of right now, I’ve mostly just been working, Freelance animation work online, along with part time job, which has been cool. But as of my own art and work, I have recently been making some funny cartoons with friends that we have yet to release. Same for my own work, kinda have it on the back burner till I release everything in a big burst. I’ve just been really distracted with life.

Q. How has it been looking for animation work?

Honestly, I haven’t applied as much as I should have. Fortunately, I have had very awesome, lovely people offer work and freelance gigs here and there. Some of which I can’t talk about; A lot of indie productions, but some bigger stuff has been offered. I haven’t gotten time to update my resume or website, so it looks like I’ve done nothing for a year haha. But life has made me so busy I have either had to turn things down or just couldn’t get to it. Some really cool stuff, but you cant turn back time, unfortunately. I do wish all of said projects the best!

Q. You’ve mentioned on socials that you are working on Agent Calc 2. How far into the production are you as of now?

Yes! Agent Calc 2 is real; right now, production has been put on hold. However, character designs are final, the script is good to go, got some talented people to help out! Just making sure voice actors are set and background exploration needs to go. It may be a tad longer than the first one, so we will see. Also, there is a very VERY rough thumbnail board of the film. So honestly, things need to get polished up a bit here and there, and we will see how things go from there!

Q. Is funding anything you are thinking about as it comes to your personal projects?

Honestly, it’s something I’ve considered greatly; it would be a big, bold step, as it’s something I have just never done. I would like to make stickers at some point; I think it would be really cool. I really wanna make some plushie of Agent Calc or Doctor Equation. I’ve thought about the idea of a Kickstarter, but I guess there was that general fear of whether anyone would donate; I don’t really have a good gauge of whether I have an audience or not. Everyone so far has been very supportive of my work, but who knows.

Q. Is there anyone who you’d want to shout out who have helped in your work?

I would be typing out a giant list of names if I had to shout out anyone; everyone I follow is amazing and definitely has played a part in my creative journey, and the people who in general, appear in the credits of my films. However, I would like to give two particular shout-outs to two artists;

Dry Cole/ @Dry.Musics – Bro has made the music for a huge portion of my work, Agent Calc, Golden Buzzer, comics I’ve made. I’ve seen him work on so many other artists’ films from my school. He’s an amazing composer and sound designer, always up to something- that crazy guy. The Goat. Check out his Spotify and Bandcamp!!!!!

@Tofokyo – He was a big inspo to me during the creation of Agent Calc, and in general, is one of my favorite artists ever. He was incredibly kind and made the AMAZING credits for the first Agent Calc. Please go watch that. I think a lot of people missed it because people didn’t expect much to be in the credits, but please, his work can not be passed up. The Goat. Plus, check out his website; it’s incredible.

Q. Where can people find you online?

I am @Jremby everywhere! My main is Instagram, but Newgrounds, YouTube, sometimes Twitter, Bluesky, tumbler i think; idk, my account spreads everywhere.
