Scraps is a really fun new pilot on YouTube created by MitterMak. It has been 4 months since Mak released a teaser for the show and now the first episode is here. I have personally followed MitterMaks work for a while, he has made a lot of very well animated skits and animation memes featuring Lupin the III and Sonic the Hedgehog Which just so happens to be in the realm of my interests. The new show has been worked on apparently for years by Mak and has a lot of similarities to previously named blue hedgehog.
Scraps and Mitsy
The show follows Scraps, a little purple rascal, and his best friend Mitsy, a blue bunny, both voiced by Ki Garland. Scraps and Mitsy is having a race when they unfortunately run into the evil bug bots of unclear origin which scares Mitsy and Scraps has to decommission them. Scraps is a as the name implies, a scrappy guy who happily cheats and isn’t afraid to brawl. Mitsy on the other hand is a straight-laced and easily scared rabbit.
The whole show feels rather reminiscent of sonic the hedgehog. We follow some animal characters fighting evil robots. Most of the episode is also spent doing what sonic would do, we get to see the main cast run and destroy robots at high speeds. I think the episode is very well choreographed and its fun to see the action in the show.
The thing I’m most impressed with is the camera work. Although 2D animation don’t have a real camera you can still imagine one and scraps has a some rather advanced camera movements that you don’t really see in more static cartoons. There is, as an example, one shot where camera begins in front of Scraps and as he runs past it it keeps following from behind in a way that looks really good. It sort of makes me wonder if they used any 3d software for this, but if they did it is not obvious at all.
The only thing I’m sort of mixed on is the filter put in front of the whole cartoon. I realize its a little bit of a question of taste but I think it makes the pilot look a little muddled. A couple days ago I was talking about Planetronika’s bold decision to only show it in 480p and I think Scraps is trying to do something similar but it falls a little short for me. Regardless it’s by no means the end of the world and you might not even be bothered by it.
It looks over all great and ends on an interesting cliff hanger. Over all I think its a well made pilot and I’m really curios of what is coming. If you are any fan of Sonic or just fast paced animated action I’d definitely recommend it.
